Hmm… how about team building! That ought to do the job, right?
Team building can be awesome, but it won’t deliver sustainable and long-term change, nor will it allow you to dig deep enough to truly fix the underlying issue.
So, where do you start?
Well, you can’t fix something unless you know the root cause of what you’re fixing.
Here’s a step-by-step process I take my clients through:
STEP 1️⃣ Diagnose the problem.
Assess where your team is now in order to get a baseline and determine where to focus change efforts.
Team Coaching International (TCI)’s Team Diagnostic (done by all team members) and Team 360 (done by team’s stakeholders) are two tools I’m certified in and find INCREDIBLY insightful. They measure 14 elements of productivity (i.e.. how team drives results) and positivity (because the way team members interact with each other influences the quality and output of results).
STEP 2️⃣ Create a custom team coaching program.
Once we know what’s standing between your team and the results you want to create, we design experiences and practice tools to help team members shift perspectives, embrace new behaviors, and build muscle memory. Let me be clear about the difference between consulting and coaching in this case – a consultant will tell you to build trust and improve communication (great but duh, and HOW?). This is where a team coach like me comes in. I will take you through experiential and proven exercises and frameworks and hold the team accountable to turn practice into habit so the team can do anytime on its own.
STEP 3️⃣And finally, measure improvements.
After some time (I’d give it 3-6 months at a minimum), measure the results you’ve achieved with the help of your new systems using the same TCI tools. You’ll be able to compare your new results with your baseline results and clearly see what’s working and what’s not working.
